PDHPE

The students at St Martin’s participate fully in a variety of Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) programs. The outcomes of the Board of Studies are the focus of our teaching.

Former St Martin’s students Olympic sprinter Matt Shirvington and Grand Slam Tennis Player Chris O’Connell.

The PDH component of the program closely follows the units based on the following strands: Growth and Development, Interpersonal Relationships, Personal Health Choices and Safe Living. The PE (Sport) component is also very important in the school. We have a specialist PE teacher who takes weekly lessons with each class and the children regularly participate in fitness, team clinics (soccer, basketball and cricket) and skills activities throughout the year. Students also have class sport with their teachers once a week. Students currently wear their sports uniform each Tuesday and Wednesday.

Students are involved in the Annual Swimming and Athletics Carnivals. Students who excel in various winter and summer sports are also invited to represent the school at interschool, diocesan, inter-diocesan and state level. Winter sports include Netball, Rugby League, AFL, Eagle Tag and Cross Country. They are given the opportunity to improve their skills and then compete against other Peninsula Schools. A K-2 Water Safety Day is offered at a local swim centre and students in Years 3-6 participate in a Surf Awareness Program.

Each year, we recognise outstanding sporting achievement. Two champion shields are awarded to students who excel in swimming and running. The ‘Matt Shirvington’ Shield is awarded to the fastest 100 metre runner at the Annual Athletics Carnival, whilst the ‘Andrew Dawson’ Shield is awarded to the fastest 100 metre freestyle swimmer at the Annual Swimming Carnival. There is also 50 metre Swimming Shield presented each year.
